Our Dear Friend Norvin

It is with the heaviest of hearts that we pass on the sad news of the passing of our dear friend, Norvin Schexnaildre.  Norvin was a true gem.  He was a gentleman, a joker, a fast friend, a tireless volunteer and an amazing storyteller besides being an awesome husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.  Please join me in lifting Norvin’s family up in your thoughts and prayers as they prepare to say their final goodbyes. 

Norvin will be laid to rest on July 16th.  Services will be held at St. Mary Magdalen Church, 6425 West Metairie Avenue in Metairie.  Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 Noon with a Mass following visitation.  Interment will be scheduled for a later date.  Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the Wounded Warrior Project at woundedwarriorproject.org/donate or to the Coastal Conservation Association at Louisiana CCA

Norvin Jude Schexnaildre, 86, of Metairie, Louisiana, passed away peacefully on 10 July 2022 at Woldenberg Village Nursing Home in New Orleans. Norvin was born in New Orleans on August 22, 1935, to Hazel and Norvin Joseph Schexnaildre, the eldest of six children. As a young teenager, he moved to Houma with his family and attended Terrebonne High School, where he played on the varsity basketball team. After graduating high school, he made his way back to New Orleans to pursue his electrical license and be near his childhood sweetheart, a former next-door neighbor. He married his sweetheart, Loyce, on June 7th, 1958. He completed his course of studies at Delgado Community College, received his electrical license, and went on to a successful 40+ year career as an electrician and member of the IBEW Local 130. Along the way, Norvin and Loyce had five children, one girl, and four boys. They moved from New Orleans to Metairie in 1971 and have resided there ever since. Norvin also served in the Louisiana Army National Guard from February 1954 to August 1980, with specialties in Field Artillery Fire Direction, Supply & Logistics, and Combat Engineering. He earned the rank of Sergeant Major, the highest enlisted rank in the Army, and held multiple leadership positions during his tenure in the LAARNG. He played an integral role in the development of the first Non Commissioned Officers Training Academy within the LAARNG, and served as its first Commandant. His military awards include the Army Achievement Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Louisiana Legion of Merit, Louisiana Cross of Merit, and many other awards as well as numerous Letters of Commendation. Over the years, Norvin has been involved in a variety of organizations, civilian and military, and has served in leadership positions with them as well. Among these organizations is the Electrical Association of New Orleans, Louisiana National Guard Enlisted Association, Coastal Conservation Association, Washington Artillery Veterans Association, and the Washington Artillery Board of Managers. He spent much of his free time serving these organizations, especially after retirement. Norvin was an avid angler and enjoyed his opportunities to go down to his camp in Dulac, LA, and go fishing. He also enjoyed tending to his vegetable garden, eating the fruits of his labors, and sharing his harvest with family and friends. Norvin is survived by: his wife Loyce, his son Kevin (Debbie), daughter Terry Schexnaildre Vial (Chris), son Keith (Danielle), son Kristin (Angie), son Kurt (Jennifer), 17 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren; his brothers Merl and Alvin, sisters Helena Burgard and Paulette Rogers. He was preceded in death by his parents, Norvin Joseph and Hazel Schexnaildre, his sister Rosary Glynn, and daughter-in-law Linda Schexnaildre. Services for Norvin Schexnaildre will be on Saturday, July 16 at St. Mary Magdalen Church, 6425 West Metairie Ave, Metairie LA 70003. Visitation will be from 10 am – 12 pm. Mass will be from 12 pm -1 pm. Inurnment will be scheduled for a later date. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the Wounded Warrior Project at woundedwarriorproject.org/donate or to the Coastal Conservation Association at Louisiana CCA.
